January Prayer Topic: Word for the Year with God

One Word?

Easy.

Merriam-Webster definition of easy?

1a: causing or involving little difficulty or discomfort
b: requiring or indicating little effort, thought, or reflection

This is what I wanted. Lying in bed, tear-soaked cheeks. I wanted it to be just a little easier. For the first in time in my relationship with God, I was having it out with Him. Yes, I’ve been overwhelmed, sad, feeling like my relationship may not have been as close as I have wanted it to be. But this emotion was new for us. I was so angry and frustrated, not just at the situation, but actually at God.

I’ve told other’s “He can handle your anger and frustration” and in my heart, I believed what I was telling them. But we-God and I had never been there. Not like this.

Last year I had been praying and intentionally trying to practice our word “abide.” Learning to practice His presence in the every day, connected to the vine in every situation. Trying to allow Him to be part of every thought, every decision. I found how easily distracted I am, but how gracious, steadfast, and reminding God is. He led me to read books, have conversations, hear podcasts, learn in Bible study about it’s not about perfection, but the process of Him working it out in me. And I had moments where I not only believe it, but I felt it.

But, in that moment, I didn’t want him to be working out the process in me, it was too hard. Our family seemed to be being attacked on all sides, my health, my family’s health, the Paradise fire, work, the ministry plans that we had been working on for 2 years, everything seemed to be falling apart at the same time. I felt pulled in all directions trying to say “yes” to everything HE was asking for me.

As I laid there in bed next to my husband, I told him. No-I told God, I did not doubt His love for me, I did not doubt that He was kind to me, I did not doubt that He has good things for me. But I was afraid of what He might ask next of me. I was afraid He was asking too much of me, I could not do it. I was afraid because I did not want to say “no” to Him, and I felt if He asked one more thing of me, I would say “no.”

It was then that I realized my anger came from fear. Through this fear and anger, I challenged Him. I feel like I know His voice, and in the moment, He was choosing to remain silent. I told Him I was trying my best, I was trying to allow Him to work in me. I pleaded that He would just tell me what He wanted of me. I told Him how unfair I felt that He would say so little in the Bible about Enoch, the man who walked with God and was taken and would not tell us anything else about how he did it. I told him I wasn’t sure I could be caregiver, handle the emotion for the loss in our family, stress from work, the disappointment for a ministry seemingly failing after years for dreaming and planning. And knowing he was choosing to be silent, I called Him on it. “Now, when I’m pleading for answers when I need You to say something to me. You choose to be silent!”

Silence. Nothing. In bed, sobbing as floodgates opened and tears came. In the stillness, God chose silence. Instead of speaking-He chose to hold me.  In His infinite kindness and goodness, like the parent I wish to be, He allowed me to beat on His chest and He took it. He let me have it out, then wrapped His arms of love around me. He did not reprimand me for using that tone of voice with Him, He did not tell me how good I actually have it, He did not give me the answers I wanted. He just held me in His love.

As the sobbing calmed and remaining tears trickled down my cheeks. I felt a peace. It was the peace that He had promised and spoken to me just a few weeks before.

In the stillness, my husband wrapped his arms around me. “I don’t know what God wants from you. But I know he doesn’t want a robot. He wants to know what you want, what you can handle. He wants you to be honest with Him. He wants a real relationship with you.”

In the stillness, in the silence, I fell asleep, still unsure of what was next. But asleep wrapped in His love and peace.

The next morning, His still small voice came. “I sent you an example. I sent you My Son.”

Jesus says, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30)

What is Next After Letting Go

"We have to keep letting go, and slowly, but surely, the great full life of God will invade us, penetrating every part. Then Jesus will have complete and effective dominion in us, and people will take notice that we have been with Him."

“My Utmost for His Highest, Updated Edition" by Oswald Chambers

If I had read the above quote a month ago, I would have closed my heart to the words.  The last seven months have been very dark.  Through circumstances that I will get into later, I had so much built up anger and resentment towards God. Yet, He never left my side.

It was only a few weeks ago when I was with a friend, that I started to slowly come into the light and realize that I needed to let go of that resentment.  My friend said that the darkness I felt was from the devil, and I had to have Jesus help me get that devil out of my life.

“Submit yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” James 4:7 (NLT)

At first, I couldn’t do it.  It was that dark in my soul and my heart.  She started to pray and all the sudden I let out a loud voice, “In Jesus name, devil flee from me.”  I had to let go of the anger and resentment towards God.  I had to. It was killing me.

It didn’t just suddenly disappear right after that prayer. Yes, I immediately felt the pressure that had been on my chest disappear.  Yes, I can say that I let it all go, but there is a moment in each day since, that I realize I have picked it back up.

Every day I must have my connection with Jesus. Every day, I must keep letting go of what is not from God.  For you see, I am now, where I want the great full life of God to invade me completely and totally.  Where there was darkness, I want the light to shine.  Where there was hate, I want love.

Only Light can drive out darkness.
This month, our prayer is about what is next after letting go.  The next step is what Oswald Chambers said.  Every day, keep letting go.  Every day, and eventually, God will invade us completely.

Dear Poppa God,
Thank you for your light shining on us.  Thank you that every day we can let go of those things that are not of you.  Please invade us with your presence, Poppa God.  May each of us get to the point that people notice that we have been with you.
In Jesus Name
Amen

What Am I Thankful For?

What am I thankful for?  As I reflected on that question, it took me a little bit to come up with an answer. You see, I am kind of going through a little pity party for myself right now.  Life isn’t going as I “planned.”

This question of “What am I thankful for?” is making me reevaluate the important things in my life that I do have.  To look past those things that are darkening my soul and look to those things that are lights in my life.  I want to see the things in life that I am thankful for.

Life doesn’t always go as planned.  In fact, it rarely does. The things in life that I thought I would be doing, I am not. Who I would be or be with, I am not.  I have this imaginary yard stick by which I am measuring my life.

My life is not a bad life. It is just not where I thought I should be.  Maybe that is where we all are at some point in our lives or maybe multiple times in our lives. I know that I am not the only one that can’t see past the “What If or If only” of life?

I seem to have a lot of “What if?” or “If only?” in my life.  What if I “this” had happened, then my life would be better.  “If only I did this” or “had that”, then life would be perfect.
Lord, I need to look at what I do have, and all the blessings that you have given me. Help me to realize what I have, and be grateful for that.  Help me to see past the “What If” or “if only” and see that what is in my life right now.

Amen

So, what am I thankful for?

I am thankful for the people in my life. Each person in my life adds variety and spice to it.  Without each one of them, I would not be the person I am today. Each person, whether family, friends, or friends that are family and family that are friends, makes my life so much richer.

That is what I am going to focus on, the people in my life and the moments that I have with them.

After all, you may have everything you ever wanted in life, but if you don’t have people in your life, what is the point. I think that the points in life are the moments that we spend with family and friends.
This month, yes, it is the end of the month, but better late than never, I am going to look at the people that I do have in my life.  I don’t want to dwell on the things or people that I don’t have in my life. Instead, I want to look at the people and appreciate the people I do have in my life.

My family, I feel so lucky that my family and I are close.  I don’t just mean by the physical location of each of us. I am talking about the bond that we have with each other.  Our relationships with each other, is a good thing.  The times we spend together, are moments to treasure.

Two of my best friends don’t live close by, but we are bonded together. They are my family. No distance can come between us.  Through the wonders of cell phones, e-mails, texts, and other devices, I can call them up and we can talk for hours. I am thankful for their love and support through the years. We lean on each other.

Those people I work with, I am thankful for.  Yes, we are all different personalities, but that is what makes it a good thing.  Each one brings something to the table, and that is a good thing.

It is the people in my life that I am so thankful for.  The moments that we have together, make up life. Each one brings special attributes to my life. The memories that we make will last a lifetime.

“Life is not measured by the number of breaths you take, but by the moments that take you breath away.” (George Carlin)

When I look back, I want to have memories of time with my family and friends.

So, I may not be where I think I should be, but I have people in my life that I love and that love me. There is nothing better than that.

Even if the people are no longer with us, we always have the memories of our times together.
For you reading this, I hope and pray that you find those moments, or people that you are thankful for.   Don’t get so caught up in the “What If” or the “If only” that you lose sight of the what is now.  Count your blessings and moments.
